Work is much better

Since writing about how I dislike my job, things have become a lot better. Praise God! We are currently in the process of redesigning our entire magazine, dropping from a 32-page weekly to a 60 plus page fortnightly. This may not sound terribly exciting, but it is. Basically, it will mean a bigger budget for art direction and photography, more features (which I’m happy about), a sexy front cover and totally new look and feel.

Personally, I’m excited. I went to my first photo shoot last week for a profile piece I’m writing, which was a great experience. At the moment, I’m working on a special report on drug-taking, alcohol abuse and stress in the industry I cover. It’s probably the closest I’ve come to “investigative” journalism (and I use that term very lightly!). It’s incredible how much more motivated you are to write when the layout of your piece looks like it belongs in The Good Weekend, not a school newsletter. And when you have more of a say about the things you get to write, and the way it pans out.

Work is a hard thing to get right. Love it too much and it becomes an idol. Hate your job, however, and it poisons other areas of your life. At the moment, I am thankful God has kept me busy and occupied with work that is stimulating. I also pray that I won’t lose sight of the bigger picture: the inheritance that can never perish spoil or fade, kept in heaven for me (I have this written on a card under my computer - thanks to Carrie).
