I thought I’d give an update on how Sam’s media bank is going.
So far, so good. Like a bower bird, I’ve collected quite a few items and stored them away. Sam even used two of them in his Revelation sermons. The first was a spread from Cosmopolitan illustrating the worship of fashion. The second was an article about nightclubs in Grazia.
One problem though. My natural bias towards female consumer material has given his examples a slightly girly bent - not that it detracts from the sermon, but it does make the preacher come across as somewhat metrosexual. Sam is pretty metro, unashamedly, and I love it. But perhaps not the best thing if we end up somewhere like, I don’t know, Blacktown.
So I think I need a more gender-neutral media pool to swim in. Any ideas? I already scan all the major city news sites - Perth Now, Brisbane Times, Adelaide Now, SMH.com, plus the Australian - a habit I got into from my last job. I look at ads, catalogues and brochures. I read the Monthly and Economist, on occasion. Good Weekend. The Australian magazine. Wish. The problem with serious journals as opposed to more superficial lifestyle magazines and gossip rags is that it’s harder to get something that is pithy and stand-alone for a sermon.
Another problem my cluelessness when it comes to men. What do they read? What do they consume? I have no idea. Car mags? FHM and Ralph? I can get my hands on them at work, but I’m not sure how I feel about presenting my lovely husband with semi-nude picture of Lara Bingle after a hard day’s work (although that would probably make me the perfect wife, as far as our society’s concerned).
Any ideas? Is there something hot I’m missing?
my husband doesn’t go near any magsc

My hunch is that most guys avoid consuming written words as much as possible…pictures, sport and computer games are fun. so are gadgets.
There is stuff written for people into these things though, so i’d add technology and gaming mags to the list…? Lots of the ‘action’ is online, but maybe have a look at what mags have pride of place in the local newsagent computer section.
for gadgets it’s almost all online see engadget.com There is also a mag called T3 i think.
The problem is, i suspect, how to work an angle for sermon material…my guess it that knowing what’s hot might earn you some cred amongst people into this stuff but not much more.
Also, I noticed that there was some talk of electronic filing in the previous post…
If you want to do it there is no need for a fancy database, just another wordpress installation (for your own use). Each thing you collect is scanned and added as a new post and of course you can then categorise and tag. fully searchable and you already know how to use it!!
I’ll check when i’m back in Adelaide this weekend - If i can find it, I have a scanner that you guys can use.
i’m thinking give ralph and fhm a miss.. not very helpful mags.
I have some Rugby League Week’s?:)
Nothing wrong with the daily newspapers I reckon - clean and pretty universal for both genders.
The problem with using guy or girl mags is it will resonate with one half of the audience. Like when preachers use sporting analogies
The other option is to not mention where it came from. Eg
“I was reading an article the other day which was about…”
yeah. I admit, whenever a preacher uses a sporting analogy, I always tune out.
I think daily news is the way to go.
I use Google email alerts on a regular basis - you set up a scan for key words and then every time these come up in any press items (news, blogs - that’s how I found you and your loyalty blog, mags, websites, professional associations etc) you get an emailed listing - sometimes you need to register to get the detail but most often this is free and you can cancel the membership afterwards.
I’d think about what things you might want to include in the sermins and add these ‘alerts’ and see what drops into your email - could be some interesting stuff to pool upon.
