Coffee Roasting

Sorry for the lack of posts of late. Exams are happening. This morning was Old Testament 1 - it was a pretty reasonable paper - well I at least got all the questions I wanted. Thanks to Reuben for the sweet Genesis 1-11 study paper that came in handy for question 1!

But who wants to talk about exams? On to the good stuff! Some exciting news. Guthers, Matt, and myself are now the proud owners of a BBQ roaster. We picked it up about a fortnight ago, and now have roasted a few times. Our first roast was a disaster (unless charcoal is your thing - we forgot to start the timer!) but Fridays roast was great. We did one kilo of Harar, and I think it’ll be pretty tasty. We got first crack about 10 mins, second just on 14 mins, and they came out nice and even. We’re still getting the hang of getting the beans out quickly and onto a fan to cool, but practice will make perfect.

Once we get into the swing of it, we may even offer some of it up for sale. Probably around the $6.50 for 250g mark, and of course we’d offer a Moore College or student discount. Would you be interested in buying? Here’s the roaster in action!

  3. Awesome!

BTW How’d you and Matt go with those beans I cooked a few weeks ago?

  4. Mate,

I’d dead set love to try some of your coffee! What are Harar beans? Where are they from??

    Nice work bro!

  5. Mark - Harar is a city in Ethiopia. Tasty beans indeed. Nice chocolatey aftertaste.

Michelle - they were ok - I only had some of the columbian - I found them a bit under-done for my white coffee palate, but I can imagine they would have been nice black. A fair bit of chaff was still on the beans too?

  6. Colombian? Really? I thought I did an El Salvie and a Brazilian?

Chaff shouldn’t affect the taste - but it is one of my quibbles with the Gene. However, I do favour lighter roasts, and I need to remember I’m not normal when I roast for other people ;) Ah well, sorry ’bout that.

  8. Actually, you’re right, it was the El Salvador.

Smileys seem to go onto the next line on our blog. Don’t know why!

  9. Sam, I’m gonna follow Earng’s lead and jump on the “I want your coffee” bandwagon. Let us know when you’re offering it for sale!
