It irritates me…

…that the media are so vicious about what Michelle Obama wears.

It bothers me because she can’t seem to do anything right. If she wears something expensive, they say she’s not “down to earth” enough. If she doesn’t wear something trendy, they make really nasty comments. For goodness sake, she’s a successful lawyer, mother of two and now wife to the President of the United States…isn’t that enough? Why does she have to be the next Jackie O? She’s her own person. I think she’s got a little more to concern herself with than worrying about which designer outfit to wear.

It also bothers me because no one criticises what men wear. It’s this old double standard that says while men are judged by their abilities and substance, while women are judged by their demeanor and looks.

It’s so irritating.

Indeed. Who’d want to be first lady, when you’re always considered second-rate in everything you do!

  2. …but she looked like a lady bug election night…oh…ummm…

and not all the press has been bad – she has had some rave reviews on the ABC for using every women brands in comparison with Palin’s designer stuff. good on her!

AND its interesting that style often rules over substance – something the democrats realised in marketing under 25′s who, as Ravi Zaccharias says ” feel what they see and think with their feelings”.

    its a designers world onlinesoph!

That is very interesting because I have been hearing only good things about Michelle Obama’s clothes; she dresses beautifully and is just like a new Jackie O. But I only hear negative comments about Sarah Palin, either she is wearing too cheap or too expensive things.

I am not exaggerating, something weird is going on with the media here. If the US is divided approximately in half politically, why is the media (including Hollywood) almost entirely Liberal?

…but that’s what annoys me, Shane! It’s not the bad press, it’s the hyperbolic nature of it – they act like what these women wear is the sum total of who they are. Why do we care more about what Palin and Michelle wear, rather than their values? There’s something seriously wrong about that.

Don’t get me wrong, I really love fashion and get that it’s a way of expressing yourself (and speaking of fashion, note to self: don’t wear pleated skirts on a windy day!!!), but it annoys me that women fall under this scrutiny.

  5. maybe all women in the public should wear suits like men…. but then they’d probably get more focus on their hair, on their earlobes or whatever … sigh…

  6. onlinesoph says:

    haha, shane:)

But if they wear suits, then the public would say, “Why is she trying to act like a man? She must be really bullish, we can’t relate to her, she isn’t “soft” enough, etc…”

Kristina, is that the way the US media usually is, or was that a once-off? I’d be interested to know.
